
Magruder Primary school is a Title I school which serves kindergarten, first, and second grade students. The school also has two classes that serve preschool and special education students. Total student population during the 2009-10 school year was 329, in 2010-11 was the enrollment was 306, and at the start of the 2011-12 total enrollment was 518. The school is located in the city's East End.
Newport News School Superintendent Dr. Ashby Kilgore and City Manager Neil Morgan have decided it wll be cheaper and more politically expediant to replace the East End's Magruder Primary School rather than to attempt repairs or to close the school altogether.
In a letter dated May 17, 2012 City Manager Neil Morgan expresses his support of Dr. Kilgore's suggestion to replace Magruder Primary. (Note: Magruder is referred to in one instance as a primary school, and in another as an elementary school.) Here is the letter:
